Dick;
The number 390 is Roanoke's Builders number, it does not have anything to do with the assigned road number per say. Each locomotive has its own builder's number and road number, which are separate from each other, for example, N&W #613 (rd #) has a builders number of 390, #611 is #388. The builders plate was attached to the outside of the shrouding on the J's.
Locomotives still are assigned a builders number to this day, now by GE or EMD, which signifies various things to them.
Hope this helps,
Russ Goodwin

Everyone,
I'm new to NWHS and I'm really baffled about the eBay "J builder's plate." I can't make any sense of it. No J's in the three hundreds and only 611-613 (last batch) produced in 1950. I can't find any older (1800s?) N&W locos that had the J designation either - but, of course they wouldn't have a 1950 builder's date anyway. It doesn't even look like a J builder's plate to me based on the photos I have.
Was this plate somehow associated with a J1 (then how 1950?)? Perhaps mounted underneath a streamlined shroud? Or is it a fanciful casting simply needed for the wall of a den?

There is a J builder's plate on ebay. Since I can't afford it, maybe one of you can. Out of curiosity, to which J was this plate made for?
