I have a picture of a Y sitting in Galax so am sure they ran the entire
length of the Pulaski-Galax branch. If I remember correctly, from Muncey
Webb's book, the Y's were backed to the wye at Fries Junction and turned
around there....

According to Radford Division Timetables, the tonnage ratings for the
Y3 on the Saltville Branch first appeared in Timetable No. 19,
effective September 24, 1939. The Y5 and Y6 were added in Timetable No.
1, effective November 18, 1951. Prior tonnage rating charts were for
Z1, Z1b, M or W.
Indeed the question is probably dictated by the bridges, and available
power and need for heavier tonnage, not by facilities for turning.
