Subject: "Old Engines"

I live about a block from the Norfolk Southern tracks
at Brandy Station, VA. The other day a neighbor told
me that at a certain time of the year "old engines go
by." Does anyone know what he's talking about?
Thanks.

Hello, Gary:

Depending on how old the neighbor is and whether that
person was referring to recent or past times, the
reference may have been to excursions that featured
the Southern Railway steam stable in the 1980s. Of
course, a non-railfan doesn't know much about new or
vintage diesel locomotives. They all realize it's an
old engine if it is a choo-choo.

If you learn something different, please share it with
us. Maybe there's an undiscovered migratory pattern
of E and F units through Brandy that, like the
swallows of Capistrano, the rest of us would want to
come and watch.

Best wishes,
