Wayne,
       That depends on whether they were 40 loads or 40 emptys. The Improved 
Y classes should be able to pull a little more tonnage than a single GE Dash-9 
or EMD SD60/70. How much depends on the grade.
       Here on "The Valley" a Dash-9 is rated at 2950 tons NB where an 
Improved Y was rated at 3200 tons NB.
