What color was the lettering? I have an HO model by Bev-Bel (#593, an Athearn PS2CD) that is dark gray with white lettering. It has the 1971 NW style, and car number 177824. I've always wondered if there was a prototype, or why they came up with such a strange model.

On Friday 11th March I saw an HC 71 3-bay covered hopper #177672. It had the boxy NW at the top left corner above the car number. The odd thing about it was, it was painted in a very dark grey. There was a bit of what I suppose to be red primer bleeding through the sides on the middle 6 panels. Of all the N&W hoppers I have photographed, I have never seen one in this paint color before. Any thoughts on it?
