Train derails in Radford

by Scott Leamon / WSLS NewsChannel 10
April 28, 2005

A sturdy tree was the only thing keeping a derailed
Radford train from crushing a child's outdoor swing
set Thursday afternoon.

Radford fire chief Lee Simpkins said the train
derailed around 4 PM.

Simpkins said no one was hurt.

Neighbors at the scene said the train was not
moving, and workers had been unloading rock salt from
its cars most of the day.

Two of the cars were completely on their sides.
An additional pair of cars were off the tracks, but
one rested against a tree which seemed to support it,
and the car behind it.

A spokeswoman from Norfolk Southern said Thursday
night the cars belonged to the train company, but a
separate company owned the engine
pulling the train, therefore Norfolk Southern was not
investigating the accident.

Neighbors at the scene did not know the name of
the company which distributes the rock salt.

Radford city leaders could not be reached for
comment.

Hello, all:

I assume this is a local industry; where is it in
relation to Radford yard?

Just curious,

Frank
