Matewan Question

For what it is worth on this question, I just checked an 1893 map of the
Ohio Extension that I have framed on the wall of my office and it shows the
main line going across Hatfield bend, not around it. The map covers from
Ironton to Bluefield and is only about 31/2 feet long. So doesn't show real
detailed track info but it clearly shows that the extension would cut
through the neck of the bend.

Of course, it may be that they ran around the bend while building the
extension, at least till they got the tunnel and bridges complete.
Temporary run around tracks was often run in those days to allow connections
and speed construction of other sections of a line. There was really no
other easy way to get supplies into that part of the state in those days
except on the railroad.

Jerome:

Speaking of said map,

I believe the routing through Lobata was first. This '28 map shows the route
already disconnected and why would they run it 80% of the distance without
connecting? I'm pretty sure this is the place Gordon Hamilton showed us on
the way home from Williamson.

There was a question about one week ago concerning track arrangements at two
locations in WV. Didn't save the item. Was looking at map sources tonight
trying to answer my own question about Matewan and remembered one source
which I don't think has been noted in the group. Try either maptech.com or
historic.maptech.com. Limited number of old USGS maps; found some pre -1900
maps for something I'm doing in NJ. Didn't help me with Matewan, though;
only available map is 1928.
