Naval Base vs Naval Shipyard

There's a middle ground here.  The official names of the naval station and 
the shipyard have been explained correctly, but locals referring to it (them) as 
the "Navy Base" is true and is not limited to Norfolk, Portsmouth, or the 
Navy.  All over the nation locals often refer to military installations of all 
types (stations, forts, air bases, supply centers, depots, etc.) as the 
"Navy/Army/Air Force/ Marine/Coast Guard Base" regardless of the installation's 
official name.
