In all of this talk about the scrapping of locomotives, I have not seen anyone mention the Y that was scrapped in Roanoke in 1975 or 1976. The first time I saw it I was visiting Roanoke from Tech, I had never seen such a massive locomotive. We did not stay to study it, but it appeared to be complete. In the next visit to the neighborhood, we found it after work had begun with the torch. It was the saddest thing I had ever seen. It seemed so odd. It had waited that long safe from the torch, why did the pride of the N&W have to get cut up.

611 sat with three other J's in a dead line in Bluefield, I am not sure how long, but she was then retrieved for excursions. I am not even sure if 611 was ever removed from the roster, and if so, when. I am not even sure if the position 611 was in regarding the dead line was intentional, as she was at one end so she could have been found easily and removed.
As for another N&W engine, Y6b 2194, I have heard that this engine lingered until the spring of 1960 in service, but don't know what happened to her after then. I suppose 2194 would have been retired and sent away shortly afterward. I suppose 2194 was among the Y6's still working out of Williamson on mine runs toward the end.

Thanks, very helpful. I would hate to see it, but does anyone have photos of the string of dead steamers? Also after they were retired, in general where did the locomotives sit? I have saw photos of J's dead in Bluefield? And how long was before he last A,J,K or Y was scrapped? Maybe late mid 1960"s? Again Thanks
