Prior to 1887, Radford was known as Central Depot (not New River
Depot), for being near the midpoint on the original Virginia & Tennessee.
New River Depot (now shown as New River on the Delorme maps) is on
the other side of the river from Radford. This is where the New River
Extension to the Pocahontas coal fields joined the main line of the
original N&W. When the New River Extension was completed in 1883,
trains coming from Radford had to reverse direction at New River
Depot after crossing the New River bridge before proceeding up
Schooler's Hill towards Bluefield and Pocahontas. A small turntable
was located in New River for turning locomotives. A second curved
bridge was constructed over the river in 1888 which eliminated the
need for this reversing move. A photo of the bridges with the village

The junction at New River, including the curved bridge were removed
from service in 1901 after completion of the "low-grade line" through
Pepper tunnel.
