Hmm would it therefore have been common, or at least not a rarity, to have ACL hoppers on the N&W?

  I am familiar with the interchange procedure between the ACL & N&W at Petersburg, Va. during the 1950's. The ACL had an interlocking tower called "BG Tower" located where the ACL crossed the N&W. The tower was destroyed during a derailment in 1952 and not rebuilt but relocated to a room at the N&W Yard Office. Trackage rights over the N&W was given to the ACL in order for its yard engines to make a reverse move following interchanging of cars to the N&W. Next to the N&W westbound main line between the passenger station and Broadway Yd there were two interchange tracks called the "Transfer" and "Camps", that held up to a total of about 80 cars. The ACL delivered cars to the N&W via these tracks. Any amount greater had to be left on the wye track that ran behind the N&W yard office that was situated on the north side of the N&W main lines diagonally across from the passenger station. The wye track was also used at times by the N&W to interchange cars to the ACL, but this usually consisted of only small quantities because the main interchange point for the N&W was at Seacoast.

    What was the procedure at interchange points where the N&W allowed trackage rights to the other railroad during the 50's steam era?  Was there always an interlocking tower and would the connection have signals?
