John,
You are not confused. I just gave a confusing explanation. Of course, a zero would have to be added in the case that you cited in order to end up with a 3XX,XXX number.

So, in this case, these would have been ex Wabash 6600 through 6999? (The cars would not have had a 0 first digit, so they would have had to add "30" to get 6 digits). Is that right? or am I hopelessly confused?

At a result of the October 16, 1964, merger with the NKP and lease of the WAB, the NKP cars were re-numbered by adding a "2" before the NKP number, placing them in the N & W 2XX,XXX series and the WAB cars were re-numbered by adding a "3" before the WAB number, placing them into the N & W 3XX,XXX series. So, a car with reporting marks in the 3XX,XXX series would date from after October 16, 1964.

Did you make a typo? Did you mean the May 1983 ORER? If not, I am confused. I have only the Jan 1953 ORER (I model the 50's and earlier), and there are no boxcars numbered in the 306XXX series in Jan 1953. I don't have a book on the history of N&W boxcars (hint), so can't be sure, but I don't think there were any cars with that number series in 1938 and earlier. Cars of that era were mostly the 9'-3" (or so) interior height as well. So the cars you are looking at would have to be different (later) cars, in any case.
As always, I don't know everything, so I am subject to being enlightened.

        Hi Listers,
First off I want to thank everyone that has responded to my questions about the "doorless" limestone boxcars. Lister Phil Miller sent me a photo of NW 306761 passing in front of the hotel Roanoke in 1987. That fits my modeling period perfectly! Along with the prototype photo came photos of his model of the car...I'm impressed.
I now have a car number to work with. This morning I looked it up in my May 1938 Official Railway Equipment Register. The ORER lists cars numbered in the 306600-306999. All of the 105 listed 40'-6" cars have 8' door openings and an interior height of 10'-5".
The next entry in ORER is for NW 306770 with the same dimensions and 8' door opening and the next line is for NW 306828 with the same info. I don't understand as why the two are called out by themselves.
I'd still like to see more photos of the cars real or model. You can send them direct to me nwrlinemp72 at comcast.net
        Take care, John Hecker
P/S: NASCAR is at Martinsville this coming weekend. Even though the tracks have moved, I hope I get to see some trains on the Winston-Salem District!
