N&W Rule Book of April 15, 1898

In January 2003, Jim Cochran posted a request on the List for dates of N&W Rule Books.  At that time, he had books as follows:


> 12/01/05

> 11/16/30

> 4/01/45

> 11/18/51

> 1/1/67

> 3/1/81


I just came up with an N&W Rule Book effective April 15, 1898, put in effect by L.E. Johnson, General Superintendent and approved by J.M. Barr, Vice President and General Manager.  It's obvious that the book is somewhat influenced by the Standard Code produced by the Train Rules Committee of the A.A.R, but is not an *almost* direct reproduction of the Standard Code (such as was the case in later years.)

So, add this one to your list, Jim !

But perhaps, by this time, the catalog of N&W Rule Books has been completed and all the gaps have been filled in.  The savants who hold the keys to the Holy Treasures at the Roanoke Archives should know...

Oh, the book was first "loaned to" J. W Wright, Conductor, and then to J.C. Angle, Fireman, as indicated by their signatures inside the front cover.  And it was printed by (who else?...) Stone Printing & Mfg. Co. of Roanoke.  

This raises several other good questions... How far back does N&W's relationship with Stone Printing go, and what were the ties of nepotism and/or financial interest between Stone and N&W?  Aah, so many questions and so few answers !
