steam loco question

Oh, don't worry about nit picking me!  People do it all the time.  I'm used to it.
   
  I was just explaining what a man told me that worked for the N&W 47 years, so I figured he knew more than I did!  Now, if I could only remember his name!  I met him on the Holston River trestle on the VA Creeper back in 1990.

  Not to be a nit picker, but the wheels do not climb on the flange.  The shape of the flange has been research in depth and is carefully designed so that the flange does not climb the railhead.  BTW, there is also a carefully designed fillet between the wheel tread and the flange itself.
