Awhile back we were discussing just how locomotive sand was delivered to the various engine facilities on the railroad. Although I am particularly interested in the Shenandoah facility, the method was probably the same system wide.
There was some speculation that bags of sand were delivered in boxcars; another suggestion was open gondolas. The sand would have to be dried but that would not present a problem for an engine facility where steam was plentiful.
Any further thoughts on this?
