Fireman during excursion era

The assigned fireman on the operating district ( If one was called for the
train ) was payed at Firemans rate for the assigned run.
Yes there is still a union rate for fireman, used mostly for engineer
trainees that have been in training over a certain period of time.
 
Back to the excursion era,even when the railroad called a fireman he usually
just went along for the ride,while the locomotive was actually fired by a
fireman from the Steam Dept.

During the excursion era, how was the fireman paid.  IE what pay rate,
engineer, conductor, etc.  is therestill a union rate for fireman?
