Towers

For that matter, Pete, which N&W stations had tile
roofs? None that come to my mind.
The only other N&W tower I saw was X Tower, which was
next to the U.S. 29 viaduct crossing the James River.
It controlled the interlocking of the N&W track coming
off a bridge from Island Yard at Lynchburg, which then
crossed the C&O's James River Subdivision. This was
the vicinity of the former Lynchburg Union Station. I
think a one-story tower, NC, replaced it. X Tower
looked about like Cowan, but I don't remember whether
it had a tile roof.
Does anyone know when Cowan and X or other
interlocking towers --such as the VGN-ACL crossing at
Jarrat-- were retired? Anyone ever seen interior
photos of any N&W towers depicting the machine and
model board?
Good evening,

What an elegant building for a coal road! How common
were tile roofs on N&W buildings (other than
stations)?
