"Has anyone else seen through freights in the mountains with one engine?"

Ray,
    If the tonnage is not very much, they will run trains with just one 
unit. You will see this mostly on autoracks or pig/stack trains. The 
downsides are not being able to go back to another unit to do #2, not being 
able to make good time over the road and a unit failure. At which point you 
become part of the problem and not the solution.
