Could have been either of the following scenarios:
If it was company cars (NS), then it was likely loaded on the former CR West
Virginia Secondary and instead of running them south via Deepwater, it was
routed north to Columbus and then south or RR eastbound on the Columbus
District where you saw it.
If it was BNSF or UP cars, then it was likely Powder River Coal destined for
one of the river terminals such as Wheelersburg or Ceredo for one of the
river served power plants. CSX runs a few of these as well.

In late June I witnessed a loaded coal train heading south (east) at Piketon
OH. Does anyone know why a loaded coal train would be going south? Trent
