Look at most photos during the steam era .when trains ran as fast or faster than today on jointed rail . and notice the ties with exposed ends even on mainline track and worked very well. -- Todays trackwork covers the entire tie ends with ballast, yet diesels are supposed to be more "rail friendly" -- could it be necessary for expansion or the welded (ribbon) rail??
