I can recommend as a basic history resource for Gary Hollow, McDowell Co,
West Virginia (heading south up Tug Rive out of Welch) re coal tipples, coal 
camps, etc.a recently published book:  "Gary Hollow - A History of the Largest 
Coal Mining Operation in the World" by Alex P. Schust, published by Two Mule 
Publishing, 286 Princes Lane,
Harwood , Maryland 20776, or at twomule at comcast.net. It is a large format, 
474 page book with many pictures.

There are motels, one or two, as I recall, in Welch.
