That shriek made that track the most memorable for me of any of those  
on Link's records.  I'm sorry to hear that it was so uncommon.

(When I was younger, I figured that the break reflected the increase  
in Y boiler pressures over the years.)

On Link's first N&W record, there is a band recorded on the  
Shenandoah line of a Y-6b's whistle breaking into a scream.  Soon  
after the record came out, I contacted Mr. Link and I was told the  
engine on that particular band was 2173. I understand that a really  
skilled whistle-artist engineer could make that high pitched scream  
happen when closing the valve and then jerking it open again at just  
the right instant.
