SITUATION AT INGLESIDE
Four Steam Shovels and Fire Engine at Work
Tuesday morning the tracks of the N. & W. at Ingleside were
completely covered by a huge landslide. The Virginian railway runs
very near the N. & W. at that point and on a much higher elevation.
The recent rains had thoroughly loosened a tremendous fill made by
the Virginian, and as a result it slid to the N. & W. tracks,
covering them under eighteen feet of dirt for a distance of 225 feet.
As soon as possible a force of hands and steam shovels were rushed
to the scene of the slide, which, together with a fire engine, sent
out from this city, soon began to make a headway against the
disastrous slide. Yesterday a large scoop was added to increase the
work being done by the shovels. It was stated yesterday at
headquarters that the work of removing the debris will most likely be
completed today. Yesterday afternoon the work of laying a track
around the obstruction was completed so that the trains could be
started on their way.
As result of this landslide all passenger trains have been delayed
several hours as a result of the time consumed in transferring
passengers and express. As for freight traffic, that has been
completely paralyzed, not a train comping through for two days. The
laying of the track around the slide, however, considerably relieves
the situation and trains are now being rushed through with all speed.
