My name is Randy Bly and I am new to this list.
I lived in the Columbus, Ohio area from 1963 to 1972. We moved from Worthington to the small unicorporated town of Flint in 1968 and lived there until we moved to the Clearwater, Florida (where I still reside) in 1972.
After we moved to Flint, I discovered that we lived only 5 or 6 blocks west of the N&W and Penn Central railroad crossing.
I spent many hours at the Park Rd. crossing watching the N&W trains along with the (fewer) Penn Central trains. Many of the crews from both roads recognized me and were quite friendly and openly invited me into the cabs of their locos if they had to stop on red signals.
They usually had me run to the "Crowner's Grocery Store" located on the west side of the crossing, for a bottle of "pop" and they allowed me to come up in the loco to deliver their cool frosty drinks.
I guess my question to the group is did anyone ever spend time at this location watching trains? Of course, many of the N&W trains were either coal loads heading to Sandusky and coal empties heading back south to the coal fields in the Virginia's.
Thanks!
Randy Bly,
Clearwater, FL
