NEW CAROLINA RAILROAD
Line to Be Built From Rutherford to Knoxville, Tenn.
Asheville, N. C., Sept. 12 - Announcement was made here yesterday
that, contingent upon the voting of public aid bonds by Buncombe,
Henderson, Haywood, Polk and Transylvania counties, all arrangements
had been perfected for building a competing line of railroads from
Rutherford in this state, where connection will be made with the
Seaboard Air Line, to Knoxville, where the proposed road will connect
with the Louisville and Nashville road.
The identity of the bondholders is not known here, but the work of
construction will be done by the Appalachian Construction Company,
recently chartered here and the builders contemplate an expenditure
of $7,000,000.
Many state convicts will be used in the work of construction, and
the state, under an act of the legislature passed last session, will
accpet stock in the new company for this convict labor.
