The "tell-tales" were still in place when N&W began moving
automobile traffic on multi-level cars.  The Claims Department
received numerous requests for money to repair "dings" in the
new automobiles.  Research indicated that the damaged autos
were on the top level.  A major research project was undertaken  -
a trainmaster would ride the  automobile on the top level of
the first rack through the main line tunnels.   Sure  enough,
at Gordon Tunnel, as I recollect, the trainmaster noted a

:"clunk".  Investigation revealed that someone had tied a nut

on the end of one of the ropes.  Work almost completed, the
trainmaster rolled the window down and rested his hand on
the steering wheel.  Passing Davy, a pedestrian did a
double-take.
