Jim,
Thanks for the correction. I remember the entire extend of the old wall from years ago, and I suppose that recently I have seen just the part of the old wall east of Federal Street (Higginbotham Ave. before the Federal Building was built), forgetting about the change west of there.
I apologize to all for this oversight.

When urban renewal (was it during the 1960's ?) brought about the widening of Princeton Avenue from Federal Street west, that portion of the wall was dismantled and replaced by concrete. Many of the stones were taken to the city park and erected in a picnic area west of the ball park. But I remember when the wall ran all the way to Mercer Street. It also featured a couple of ramps where a vehicle could be driven down to track level. Jim Nichols

Massive Wall Will Cost Many Thousands
------
Over a year ago the Norfolk and Western began the construction of a great retaining wall along the railroad frontage extending from the division office to the Mercer street bridge. The whole scope of the work was massive. The masonry was composed of enormous cut stone and laid in cement and cost a large amount of money. There are over four thousands yards [sic], and the expenditure will be between forty and fifty thousand dollars. The wall will be completed by spring.

[This is the wall that can be seen today along the north side of Princeton Avenue, between the street and the railroad yard.]
