N&W in 1903 -- Facilities

CONTRACT LET FOR SIGNAL TOWER, SCALE HOUSE, AND MACHINE SHOP
    The machine shops in this city are to be enlarged by a handsome addition.  A new scale house is to be built and a signal tower also.  These improvements are the latest decided upon by the Norfolk and Western.  The contract for these buildings has already been let to Messrs. Wilson and Sear of Lynchburg, the firm who constructed the superintendent's house here last  June.

[I am attaching two images from the Va Tech Image Database of N&W scale houses in Bluefield.  The stone scale house in the architectural style of the Bluefield passenger station could date from 1903, judging by the appearance of the car being weighed.  The two-story wood building appears to be from a later date judging by appearances.]
