Turntables in the early 20th Century.

Mark:  On the Cincinnati District, two turntables were initially used at
Clare Yard, starting in 1901, east of Cincinnati; first a 65 footer which
was replaced with a 75 footer in 1917.  There was no turntable on the west
side of Cincinnati in Berry's Yard ( near Ivorydale) but the N&W engines may
have gone over into the B&O's yard at Ivorydale to be turned.  I just have
hints of this and no real solid documentation.  The 75 footer lasted until
the end of freight steam on the Peavine- July1956

 

Freight engines seemed to have been G's, W's or M's/M-1's and M-2's before
1924-1925

 

Up on the Hillsboro branch, there was an N&W turntable (65 footer Armstrong)
next to West Street to turn the locomotives for the return trip back down to
Sardinia.  No roundhouse or anything but the depot nearby.  But Sardinia had
a wye going back into the 1870's.

 

Clare had a two stall round house next to the turntable pit.  However, NO
passenger engines were serviced at Clare, they were all serviced up at
Idlwild by the CL&N (PRR) in the early years or at the PRR's Pendleton shops
over on the Ohio River near downtown Cincinnati.   Pendleton had a turntable
but Idlewild did not.   Big power like the E class locos apparently were not
used on the Peavine until 1924-1925 and the rebuild of the line.  Z's
started to be used then, too.

 

In 1935, a wye was built about a mile east of Clare on the other side of the
Little Miami River for the Y-2 and Y-3 locomotives that could now be used
over the line.

There was a stand-alone in Saltville, Some of the concrete elements still
exist. They are right behind the post office, adjacent to the two
under-cover locomotives.
