N. & W. BUYS ENGINES
------
Roanoke News: The Norfolk and Western Railroad Company has received during this month twenty new locomotives from the American Locomotive company, of Paterson, N. J., and ten more are expected to arrive within the next ten days. These engines are known in railroad circles a class w engines, and are 85 tons light and 130 tons equipped for the road.
These are the first engines constructed by the American Locomotive Works that have been used by the Norfolk and Western, and they are giving entire satisfaction, both to the officials and the trainmen. These engines are made by the Cooke Works of Paterson, N. J., and Mr. T. G. Gaughan, the traveling engineer of the concern, is in the city to see that the engines are tested and in No. 1 working order.

[According to Prince's book on the N&W these 30 engines were Class W2, No. 766 - 775 and No. 928 - 947. Class W2's had wider fireboxes than Class W and W1, resulting in improved steaming.]
