Falling Off in Pay Roll
Yesterday the employees of the Norfolk and Western Railway
Company, who work in the machine shops here, received their pay for
the month of December, and, although there was considerable falling
off in the sum total of the amount paid them as compared with the
preceding months of October and November, the sum was was larger.
Between eighty and ninety thousand dollars was given to the men in
checks, which they had cashed in the afternoon at the various banks
of the city.
In December, they were paid one hundred and seventeen thousand
dollars for November's work, which shows a falling off of about
thirty thousand dollars.
The pay roll of November (for October's work) amounted to about
one hundred and forty thousand dollars.
There will be an additional falling off in the pay roll for
January; that is, the one that will be paid on the 15th of February;
but it is the general impression, that after that date, the pay rolls
will be found much more encouraging. It is thought that thereafter a
marked increase will be noted in the comparative statements.
The road forces of the Norfolk and Western will be paid off on the
24 of this month.
