EdK-
Joseph Andrew Broady was a native of Saltville and his
N&W seniority was on the Pocahontas Division. He was
33 at the time of the wreck.
"Wreck of the Old 97" - the most popular version was
penned by David Graves George, Southern's operator
at Franklin Jct., Va. (now Gretna). A customer in
a tonsorial parlor in Franklin Jct. suggested putting the
words to the tune "The Ship that Never Returned".
George never had the song copyrighted. In 1924,
Vernon Dahlhart's recording sold over 6,000,000 copies.
George initially won $65,295 for his authorship, but this
was lost in litigation that went all the way to the
Supreme Court.
