The photo was made on the Roanoke Belt Line.   This
had been the main line of the Roanoke &  Southern.
 
On the north end, the Belt Line crossed the VGN 
main line west of Norwich and entered  Shaffers
Crossing near the Roadway Material Yard.  The
south end crossed Brandon near Franklin  Road
and tied into the present alignment north of  Wonju
Street.
 
Mile posts  on the Belt Line still reflect  R&S mileage,
e.g. MP R-5 is just west of the Memorial  Avenue
overhead bridge.  N&W later built a  connection from
the passenger station to Belt Line Jct. (MP  R-7.2),
but to avoid duplicating the R&S mile posts,  the
track chart shows a theoretical Mile  Post 1 and 2.
