Two Retired N&W Engineers Receive Diamond Insignia

Two retired locomotive engineers with combined service of more than 
100 years with the Norfolk & Western Railway in Roanoke received the 
diamond insignia of the railway's Veterans Assn. yesterday.

  They are Thomas T. Trout, who left his job in Roanoke terminal Feb. 
1, and Ottie Richard Jewell, who retired as a terminal engineer last 
November. Presentations were made by C. P. Blair, assistant general 
manager and general superintendent of the eastern general division.
   Trout went to work as a shopman in the terminal on Feb 12, 1907. 
He worked in the stores department here from 1909 until 1913 when he 
became a terminal fireman. He was promoted to engineer in 1918. He 
had a clear record during his entire service as fireman and engineman.
   Jewell first worked as a trackman in Roanoke yard in August 1907. 
He later worked in the signal department and in Roanoke shops before 
becoming a fireman in 1911. He was promoted to engineer in 1918. His 
son, W. A. Jewell, is a yard fireman and his brother, O. C. Jewell, 
retired recently after serving for many years as an engineer on the 
Radford division. Trout served Roanoke draft board during World War 
II and was active in many community enterprises.
