N&W Income Drops Sharply
Down 21 Per Cent During January
Norfolk and Western Railway's net income last month was 21 per cent
lower than in January of 1957, the company's monthly financial report
showed yesterday.
Net income last month was $2,171,338, down $560,000 from a year ago.
As usual, taxes exceeded net income. Taxes last month totaled
$2,286,000 or $114,000 above income.
Operating revenues last month were $17 2/3 million down more than
$2 million or 11 per cent. Operating expenses of $13 3/4 million last
month was down 8 per cent from a year ago.
Passenger revenues dipped 18 per cent to $498,000, and freight
revenues went down 11 per cent to a bit less than $16 1/2 million.
The operating ratio - the amount of each dollar of income spent on
operating expenses - climbed from 75.45 in January, 1957 to 78.27 last month.
