Some 500 Norfolk and Western railroaders from nine states will
meet at Hotel Roanoke Friday and Saturday for the carrier's 33rd
annual Better Service Conference.
THE MEN, representing almost all of the numerous skills it takes
to run a railroad, will hear talks by top officials and swap ideas in
committee meetings. Speaker at the annual dinner Friday will be Dr.
Tennyson Guyer, humorist of Findlay, Ohio.
The opening luncheon at 12:45 p.m. Friday will be addressed by
R.H. Smith, who retires as N&W president March 31. Out-of-town
delegates will be welcomed by Mayor Walter L. Young, N&W assistant
chief engineer. After lunch the conferences six committees will
discuss and prepare reports for the assembly Saturday morning.
On Saturday the delegates will hear talks by President-elect
Stuart T. Saunders; H.C. Wyatt, vice president and general manager;
F.S. Baird, vice president in charge of traffic, and C.E. Pond,
general superintendent motive power. The conference will end with a luncheon.
General Claim Agent L.C. Yates, whose department sponsors the
affair, is general chairman. All general sessions will be held in the
hotel ballroom.
Dr, Guyer will be introduced at the dinner by Vice President
Sydney F. Small. Known as "Ohio's ambassador of good will," the
