GIATTO ASKS FOR DEEPWATER DEPOT
------
General Manager Dupuy Promises to Investigate and See What He Can Do for the Town
------
TRAINS MAY BE RUNNING THERE BY MARCH FIRST
------
R. C. Ashworth, proprietor of the Hotel Powhatan, at Giatto, has received two letters from Raymond Dupuy, general superintendent of the new Deepwater and Tidewater railroad. Mr. Dupuy wrote in answer to Mr. Ashworth's request on behalf of the citizens of Giatto, that a depot be located at Giatto. He writes that he will investigate the matter and see what he can do for the town. In all probability a depot will be located at this point. An advantage that Giatto has over other towns on the Widemouth is its location. It is situated just above Big Branch Junction and is convenient to all neighboring stores.
Giatto is midway between Matoaka and Weyanoke, and but a fifteen minute ride from Wenonah, the farthest point of the Widemouth branch. Mines are located at Smokeless, Hiawatha, Springton, Wenonah and Piedmont and all traveling men working these stores make their headquarters at Giatto. From here horses are secured for drives to the stores in the locality and if a depot is located at Giatto many of the men will be able to reach their destinations via the new railroad. At the present time trains are carrying passengers on the new road to a point about three miles from Giatto.
Bets are being laid that the railroad will run trains to Giatto by March fist. Conservative estimates claim that the road will be in operation as far as Giatto by May first. Several bridges and much grading will have to be finished before this can be accomplished.
Now that the survey expects to be incorporated, the advent of the Deepwater and Tidewater and the location of a depot at Giatto will give the town unusual prestige as a headquarters for the traveling public. Mr. R. C. Ashworth will use every means to secure a station and in this undertaking he has the support of the best citizens of the town.
It will also be an advantage for the Carr Lumber company, which is one of the largest lumber companies in this section. They are located at Big Branch Junction on the Norfolk and Western.

[Did Giatto get its depot? It is not listed in the passenger timetables for the Virginian in a 1915 Official Guide.]
