Charlie,
1937 is the date of manufacture of the lock. Most, but not all, were dated in some way. The number on the key is a serial number, the "s" designating "switch key" for the type of lock it fit. I'm sure that in years past, as now, the keys were issued to operating employees by the serial number, and had to be signed for.

Thanks for all of the replies concerning lanterns!
Another question I have is concerning railroad locks. I have a heart shape N&W lock & key with 1937 on the "arm" of the lock and 5459S on the key. Can anyone tell me the significance of these numbers. Thanks again for any help anyone can give!
