Yes, I think 30-35 is extreme old age for a horse.

  As "Ole Maud"  was brought around from behind the station building the crowd (including OWL) was astonished to see her. But then, doing the math, concluded that she was indeed a stand-in. It was a great moment --- and, as the attached photo shows, no one enjoyed it more than O. Winston himself.
