8551 is the last of two C39-8 demonstrators, in fact, it's the only extant -8 demonstrator (while it's still exists anyway).  Delivered in Jan of 1984, it's not only the second new diesel received by NS, but it's the last diesel delivered to N&W specification (the second order of C36-7s, delivered later in 1984, were modified to Southern specification, as were all subsequent orders for C39-8s, regardless of sublettering). 

As for who to call... Wick Moorman is the only hope now... unless you can get Tim Janes of Progress Rail to lower his price (1-540-342-0542 ext 24)

While maligned by crews and mechanical personnel alike, these two demos are the direct precursor to the C40-8, C40-9W and ES40DC that rule the roost today...
