VIRGINIAN ALMOST A COMPLETE RAILROAD
------
Officials Who Made Tour of Inspection Find Construction of Roadbed Highly Satisfactory
------
The representatives of McArthur [ sic] Brothers, who accompanied the Virginian Railway officials on their tour of inspection of the one hundred and eight miles of the road that was built by McArthur Brothers were in the city last night en route to Roanoke. The party consisted of A. V. MacArthur [ sic], vice president and general manager of the MacArthur Brothers; D. Madden, general superintendent; David Sloan, chief engineer; Judge J. W. McGee, counsel; and A E. Windom and Frederick Mann. They completed their tour yesterday afternoon and arrived in the city on No. 8 from Rock. Mr. Sloan states that they found everything in good shape and the construction of the roadbed was highly satisfactory to the railway officials. There are yet many bridges to be constructed in this section. The McClintock-Marshall Construction company has the contract for these bridges and the manager of their company went over the ground about a month ago preparatory to beginning the work.
Three hundred and twenty-five miles of the Virginian have been laid with track and are ready for active operation. This leaves only seventy-five or eight [ sic. Probably eighty] miles on which track has not been laid. There are from Roanoke west and east about forty miles of track, which is at present used only for hauling supplies.
It looks now as if the Virginian is almost a completed railroad. What remains to be done, can be finished in a few months, if the necessary force is put to work.
The Virginian's private car, Dixie, was brought to the city yesterday and placed on a siding to await the railway officials who will complete their work today and leave for Norfolk.
