There is a Vulcan Materials rock quarry at Edgerton, that produces a 70-90 car rock train every night! Lawrenceville Brick produces traffic at the end of the line about five miles east of Lawrenceville. There are also industries in Emporia,  that the local services.

  Besides Goodyear at Danville,  Union Camp pulp mill
  at Franklin gave the road some prosperous traffic.  At
  one time, Franklin was served by A&D, SAL, and 
  a connection (Franklin and Carolina) to ACL at
  Franklin Jct.    Like other roads, A&D, (then NF&D,
  now NS) hauled pulpwood at a loss just to get the
  high revenue paper cars.  NF&D, NS haul the paper
  traffic to Suffolk, then it's taken to Portlock to be
  included in through freights.  Without NS's presence
  in Franklin, it would leave only CSX to carry all that good
  revenue.  What's west of Franklin ?  I don't know..
