Another big source of revenue for the west end of the NF&D was clay/slurry/kaolin from mines in Georgia on the Southern that was interchanged at Danville. This traffic was consigned to Union Camp's paper mill @ Franklin, VA so NF&D retired the waybill -- and enjoyed a share of the revenue considerably larger than miles travelled on the NF&D.? A&D probably handled this traffic back "in the day" and not surprisingly so, since A&D was a ward of the Southern for so many years.

This important traffic was rerouted via way of Southern - N&W to Suffolk after the creation of NS thus making the West End of the NF&D more redundant.

Ah, yes, Vulcan Materials.  In the mid-50's, there was a
construction surge and stone traffic spiraled upward.   A&D
ignored tonnage ratings and burnt up the Alcos.   
Temporarily, C&O Geeps were leased until the Alcos
could be repaired.
