What kind of research is done with them?  Do we know their schedule over the
system?

Bob,
907 arrived at its scheduled destination, Meridian, MS, last night. 
The cars are used to check track alignment and for updating the annual track
chart published for each division.  Additionally they video all NS track
they run it over, usually just the mainlines, branch lines and whatever can
be seen from the rear-facing camera. 
NS has the schedule. We just luck out when we see one.
