interesting that the reporter mentioned Sullins and Martha Washington colleges because both were on the Bristol line, Sullins at Bristol and Martha Washington at Abingdon, and those?students would have?had to ride east to Christiansburg to change to No. 3?to go west
??????????? Certainly that was one way to do it.? After Radford College was established, and
????????????maybe before, N&W operated a shuttle between Radford and Walton (See ICC
??????????? Report #651),? apparently to exchange?passengers with the Roanoke-Bluefield
??????????? trains.???When The Memphis Special rear-ended 2/4, the shuttle (five cars)
??????????? was stopped on the eastbound freight main and the conductor was trying to
????????????determine if there were any passengers to pick up from 2/4.
???????????? Getting to Norfolk for Christmas from the French Broad Institute involved riding
???????????? a bus to Johnson City, then transferring to No. 42 there?and connecting at
???????????? Roanoke with No. 16.? One year, a classmate drove me to Bristol and I caught
???????????? No. 10 with intentions of transferring to No. 26.? The Sullins students were on
???????????? board to connect with No. 2.? Christmas mail knocked the?No. 10 way behind
???????????? schedule, but N&W held No. 2 and No. 26 for?the Bristol line traffic.
