Guys: Vertical brake staffs (usually) mean direct drive hand brakes, that
is those without the mechanical advantage that the gearing that a Miner or
Ajax hand brake mechanism has. With the horizontal wheel, the brakeman is
winding up the chains around the brake staff shaft to set the brakes. The
vertical wheels using the mechanism had about a 4:1 or 5:1 mechanical
advantage. Easier to use and one could actually tighten up the brakes so
that the car wouldn't slip away by an insufficiently set brake.
Chances are the horizontal wheel brakes were on cars with K or Split K
brakes rather than the later AB type. K types weren't allowed for
interchange after about 1935(?) or so.

During an MER/NMRA convention in Philly during the 1960's, we visited the
Reading's Port Richmond coal dumper at the pier on the Delaware River. In
those innocent days, we were allowed to walk up the incline to the rotary
dumper. A brakeman boarded each car just before it was pushed up the ramp;
left the car while it was dumped; then reboarded the empty. He rode the
empty car down the roller coaster, through the reverse 'kickback' then into
the yard tracks where he
brought the car to a stop - all by hand. Then he crossed to the starting
point and repeated the procedure - all day. We were told each brakeman made
6 to 12 trips per hour, depending on how many were working the job. No
doubt this was prior to OSHA.

used to move the cars. A brake man rode the car and used the wheel to slow,
and eventually stop the car where needed.
Bowser probably used the standard hopper and didn't renumber them.
