Gordon, That name for the crick flowing through Herndon -- and underneath the bridge depicted on the front cover of H. Reid's "The Virginian Railway" (Kalmbach, 1961) is even more intriguing than "Looney." It's GOONEY Otter Crick -- and the right fork thereof! Lloyd Lewis.

IN CITY AND COALFIELD
------

Tracklaying will begin on March 15th on the line of railway being constructed by the Virginian up Winding Gulf from Mullins. The work on this feeder is being pushed rapidly.
------
Work Begins at Once
The Norfolk and Western Railway has awarded a contract for the construction of a line up Barber Creek in Wyoming county. The contractors will begin work at Herndon in a few days.

[Can anyone shed any light on the N&W item? There seem to be several discrepancies. Herndon is 7.9 miles west of Clarks Gap whereas all indications are that the Left Fork of the N&W's Bluestone-Widemouth branch ended on the east side of Clarks Gap at the Algonquin Coal Co. mine at Lamar. The N&W's proposed Guyandot and Tug River Railroad first mentioned in the 1903 Annual Report to connect Clarks Gap and Wharncliffe would have bypassed Herndon by following Beartown Creek and Pinnacle Creek to the Guyandot River so the construction in the article could not have been part of the G&TR. I could not locate a Barber Creek, but downstream from Herndon there is a Barkers Creek that flows into the Guyandot at Elmore. The stream through Herndon that flows into Barkers Creek has the intriguing name, Looney Otter Creek.]
