Subject: Matz hotel in Bluefield collapsed
BLUEFIELD — The front section of an historic landmark on Princeton Avenue, the old Matz-Milner Hotel — collapsed Friday morning, leaving rubble strewn across the Avenue, and crushing the art deco entrance and lobby of the Colonial Theater. Authorities believe that no one was injured in the collapse...............
Arriving on No. 3 one Sunday night, I registered at the Matz. The
clerk put me in a room next to the elevator shaft. The next
Sunday night, I walked a few blocks further to the West Virginian (?).
The clerk gave me a room on the 11th floor. I pushed the elevator
button. Nothing. I pushed it again. Nothing, so up the steps I
went. There on the 11th floor was the elevator with the operator
asleep. RIP.
