RAILWAY OFFICIALS ON TOUR OF COAL FIELD
------
General Manager of Norfolk and Southern Surprised at Size of Bluefield and Evidence of Prosperity
R. T. Lamb, general manager of the Norfolk and Southern Railway, N. D. Maher, general manager of the Norfolk and Western, and A. C. Needles, general superintendent, arrived in the city last night on a private Norfolk and Southern and a private Norfolk and Western car. In the party was W. R. Battles, member of the Roanoke electoral board, and Mr. Battles was fresh from a deluge of the spotlight which has been playing around him. It is reported that he is very much pleased with the agreeable duties of the position, and feels that it is one of the most pleasant performances that is thrust upon a citizen--that of servant of an appreciative public.
The party left the city at 4 o'clock this morning on a special, and today will visit the mines along Widemouth and the Elkhorn and end their coal field inspection at Gary, from which point they will go west over the system.
Mr. Lamb says his company used C. C. & R. Pocahontas Coal and he is interested in seeing the region, and promptly accepted Mr. Maher's kind invitation to go over the road.
Mr. Maher and Mr. Lamb went over a part of the city last night and Mr. Lamb was agreeably surprised. He had often heard of Bluefield but never before realized that it was a city of such size and evidence of prosperity and progress.
General Superintendent Geo. F. Johnson will accompany the party through the field but will leave it Wednesday for a visit to the far west.
The party will end their inspection tour on Friday.
Mr. Lamb is an old time resident of Norfolk and was with the Southern Railway for years before going with the Norfolk and Southern.
