I'm glad to say that I had a hand in helping with the caboose in
Abingdon. Even though it was by accident.
I was on a temporary maintainer job while the regular maintainer was
out on sick leave. The day it was moved from the storage track I was
headed to Abingdon to test the switches at Litchfield and Abingdon and
arrived right in the middle of the event. I took it upon myself to
protect the crossing at Fuller Street since we had an eastbound train
coming and there were people everywhere. It reminded me a little bit
of the excursion era.
Of course, the train went by and the caboose got moved without a
hitch. Its really something to behold when a caboose gets lifted off
the rail and onto a flatbed trailer. After everyone cleared off away
from the tracks I headed on out to do my daily chores.
That's something I'll always remember.
